Welcome

Hello!

Welcome to the September issue of Foodbytes.

Like many of you, I have almost recovered from watching two weeks of the best sport in the world.  It is so motivating watching the world’s best athletes give their absolute all and live their dreams don’t you think?

The King of the Pool, Michael Phelps obviously received a lot of media attention.  Deservedly so, given that he won a record 8 gold medals.  His diet received quite a bit of attention too after he apparently gave a rundown of what a typical eating day night look like for him.  This included two pounds of pasta, an entire pizza, energy drinks, two cups of coffee, a five-egg omelette, three slices of French toast with powdered sugar, three fried-egg sandwiches with cheese and chocolate chip pancakes.

Although it may sound like a total binge, his energy requirements are huge and he needs to eat a lot of food.  He also has a Dietitian looking after him.  I am sure there must be some fruit and vegetables in there too, he just forgot to mention them.

Julie is off overseas!

I am going to be away on an extended business trip between the 13th September and the 24th October in beautiful Canada and Hawaii.

While there I am going to support a West Australian triathlete who is competing in the Ford Ironman Hawaii Triathlon World Championship.  This event is truly amazing and for those of you don’t know about it, it is composed of a 3.8km swim, 180km bike ride and 42 km run in lava-covered terrain.  I will tell you more about it in the October newsletter.

If you need any assistance or need to make a seminar or workshop booking while I am away, my able assistant Tania can be reached on my email at julie@juliemeek.com.au.

Until next time ...

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Amid controversy, Hungry Jacks has released a new monster burger called the ‘Quad Burger’.  This monster is made up of four beef patties, four slices of cheese, two rashers of bacon and BBQ sauce on a bun.  There is no lettuce or vegetable matter to be seen.

The Quad burger contains 70 grams of fat and 4520 kJ (1000 calories), which equates to ½ the total daily calorie intake for most women and 1/3 of the total daily calorie intake for men. Not the most responsible or smartest move in the midst of our national obesity crisis.

Eating fast food for many of us is a reality of life and sometimes a little direction would be handy.  Try and limit this experience to no more than once per week.  The following information gives you some guidelines on the Good, the Bad and the Ugly.
