Welcome to FoodBytes.
I have always been a ‘count the sleeps’ kind of girl for important or exciting events and I currently have the sleep clock ticking for the family trip to Bali. As a Dietitian and Performance Specialist I always like to back up any information I provide to you with scientific facts. So, in researching crucial Bali information I naturally went straight to the most accurate source internationally, Wikipedia. Surprisingly, after finding nothing much there I tried a much better source, Juliepedia. As a result of this research I have discovered that I am one of only approximately 5 people in Perth, Western Australia that has never been to Bali! Really. It would seem this phenomenon is unique to Perth as it only takes 5 seconds to get there and much cheaper than travelling in our own state. The four of you that are left will now be just that bit more exclusive.
We are getting to the tail end of the Commonwealth Games, which has been interesting hasn’t it? Their skill, talent, strength, and sheer determination inspire me every day. It has taken on a new aspect this time around as I am now one of the Sports Dietitians at the Western Australian Institute of Sport and responsible for gymnastics, diving and invasion sports. Invasion sports are those (as the name would suggest) where your space is invaded. This includes water polo, hockey, netball and women’s football. In the theme of the games, Feel Good Food is a publication that is published each quarter by Western Potatoes and the latest spring edition features an article with Eamon Sullivan and gold medallist, Steve Hooker with some input from Clare Wood and myself. You can check it out here.
The last time we spoke, exams and Brain Food was on the menu and with the Year 12 students just under a month away from the beginning of their big event this is more relevant than ever. For those that are studying or have students in the house you can check out an article I have written with a podcast for those too tired to read at Student Box.
Alternatively, you can take a look at an interview I did on The Couch (West TV) with Fred Mafrica, which will be showing in the next week.
Have you ever wondered whether red cordial is useful for something other than sending the kids crazy or how much healthy food really costs? What about a tasty alternative to the meat pie?
